Basically, the Greek Island trick is, if you want to go to Europe, book the cheapest flight to get you across the ocean, then take a budget airline or train to your final destination.

Where to Stay in Helsinki, Finland

I stayed in downtown Helsinki and I’m glad I did.

Downtown Helsinki, Finland is the city’s bustling commercial and cultural center, offering a mix of historical landmarks, modern architecture, and diverse shopping, dining, and entertainment options. Located on the southern coast of Finland and surrounded by the Baltic Sea, downtown Helsinki is known for its stunning waterfront, picturesque streets, and vibrant atmosphere.

And the great thing is that it is very walkable.

The Helsinki Cathedral

The Helsinki Cathedral, also known as the Evangelical Lutheran Cathedral, is a stunning neoclassical church located in the heart of the Finnish capital.

Completed in 1852, the cathedral is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city and serves as a symbol of Helsinki’s religious and cultural heritage.

The cathedral features a stunning dome, a spacious interior, and beautiful stained glass windows, as well as a large statue of Martin Luther in front of the building. Visitors to the cathedral can climb the stairs to the observation deck for panoramic views of the city, and attend services or concerts that are held regularly in the building. The Helsinki Cathedral is a testament to the enduring beauty of Finnish architecture and culture.

Senate Square in Helsinki Finland

Right next to the Helsinki Cathedral are the Senate building and Senate Square.

Senate Square is a historic square located in the heart of Helsinki, Finland. It is considered one of the city’s main landmarks and is surrounded by notable buildings including the Government Palace, the University of Helsinki’s main building, and the National Library of Finland. The square features a statue of Emperor Alexander II and is also home to the Lutheran Cathedral. It is a popular gathering place for locals and tourists alike and offers scenic views of the surrounding cityscape.

The Kamppi Shopping Mall in Helsinki, Finland

The Kamppi area of Helsinki is a bustling central neighborhood located in the heart of the city. Known for its modern architecture and vibrant atmosphere, Kamppi is a popular destination for both tourists and locals alike.

Kamppi Shopping Center is one of the largest malls in Finland. The center features a wide range of shops, restaurants, and cafes, as well as a cinema and a bus terminal. The area is also home to the Kamppi Chapel, a unique wooden structure designed by the architect Tuomas Siitonen, which serves as a peaceful place for quiet reflection and meditation.

In addition to its shopping and dining options, Kamppi is also home to a number of cultural attractions, including the Museum of Finnish Architecture and the Finnish Museum of Photography. The neighborhood is also a hub for public transportation, with several tram and bus lines running through the area.

This was a great mall. I spent 75% of my time in here because of the cold outside.

The South Harbour of Helsinki

The South Harbour of Helsinki, Finland is a bustling coastal area located on the southern shore of the city. 

The South Harbour is home to several key landmarks and attractions, including the impressive Market Square, which is surrounded by a variety of shops, restaurants, and cafes. The area is also home to the famous Lonna Island, a small, car-free island that can be reached by ferry and is known for its beautiful beaches and scenic walking paths.

In addition to its scenic beauty, the South Harbour is also a hub of activity, with several major ferry lines departing from the area. You can take a ferry to nearby islands, such as Suomenlinna and Korkeasaari, or travel further afield to other parts of the Baltic region.

The South Harbour is also home to several major events and festivals throughout the year, including the popular South Harbour Festival and the Helsinki Wine Festival. With its stunning waterfront views, bustling atmosphere, and diverse range of attractions.

Unfortunately, I was there in the winter so there wasn’t much going on. 

The Stockmann Department Store

The Stockman Department Store is a landmark shopping destination located in the heart of Helsinki, Finland. Established in 1862, Stockmann is one of the oldest and largest department stores in the Nordic region, offering a wide range of products, from fashion and beauty to home goods and electronics.

The store’s spacious interior is spread over multiple levels and features an extensive selection of local and international brands. In addition to shopping, the Stockmann Department Store also offers a variety of dining options, including a gourmet food market, a cafe, and a restaurant, making it a convenient one-stop destination for all your shopping and dining needs.

Stockmann is located in the heart of Helsinki and is easily accessible by public transportation, making it a convenient option for both tourists and locals. Whether you’re in the mood for some retail therapy or simply want to experience one of Helsinki’s iconic shopping destinations, the Stockmann Department Store is a must-visit.

Helsinki Airport to City Center

A super convenient method that will cost you $4.00

To access Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, the city’s main international airport, travelers can take the Finnair City Bus or take a taxi. Alternatively, the airport is also accessible by train, with regular services departing from Helsinki Central Railway Station to the airport. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes, making it a convenient option for travelers looking to get to the airport quickly and easily.

The main railway station in Helsinki is the Helsinki Central Railway Station, commonly referred to as simply “Helsinki”. The station is a hub for both national and international rail travel and offers easy access to many of the city’s top attractions. The station is conveniently located near the center of the city and is connected to the city’s comprehensive public transportation network, making it easy to get around.

Summary

I regret that I was only in Helsinki for a few days because it was a cool city. I can’t imagine how much fun it is in the summer. Downtown is filled with shopping opportunities, from high-end fashion stores to local markets. There are plenty of restaurants, cafes, and bars, offering a wide range of cuisine and drinks.

Definitely visit if you have a chance.
